Valley Lodge 58

The private hot tub on the decked patio is the standout at Valley Lodge 58, a four-bedroom lodge that sleeps eight at Tamar Valley Resort, near Callington. The resort sits among 20 acres of rolling countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

All four bedrooms are on the ground floor: a king-size, a double and two twins, one with 3ft beds and one with 2ft 6in beds. The master opens onto the decked patio. There is a bathroom with a bath and shower over, and a separate shower room. Upstairs, the open-plan living area has a dining table for big groups, a kitchen with a dishwasher, and a balcony with furniture and leafy views.

Reaching the lodge involves 18 external steps and then a short path around the property to the front door. Guests share the resort's indoor heated pool, outdoor heated pool (open mid-May to mid-September, weather permitting), gym, bar, outdoor chess and tennis courts, which open from Easter until October half term. Facilities may have seasonal opening times, and the pools and gym are booked at reception once you are on site; the gym and pool are not open to under-16s. During school holidays there is a programme of quiz nights and karaoke, plus archery, rock climbing, canoeing and abseiling, subject to availability and at extra cost.

The on-site shop and pub are a 10-minute walk, and the coast is less than 10 miles away. Heating is electric, with one off-road parking space, WiFi and a TV with DVD player. Fuel, power, bed linen and towels are included, and a cot and highchair are available on request. One well-behaved pet is welcome, though breeds listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 are not permitted. Holiday park rules prevent workers and contractors staying on site, and smoking is not allowed. The lodge suits two families or a group of friends who want a hot tub and pools, and is less good for anyone wary of the 18 steps up to the door.
